Suminagashi Workshop

Suminagashi is a traditional technique of transferring the marbling patterns created by dropping Sumi ink or paints on the surface of water onto a sheet of paper. It is said the origin of Suminagashi goes back to the 9th century when it was a courtly activity that enjoyed the transforming patterns created by dropping Sumi ink on the surface of rivers.

In this workshop, participants will make Suminagashi (marbling) on postcard-size Washi paper and take one of their favorites home as a framed piece.

The instructor will be PIGMENT TOKYO staff member Masayoshi Nojo, who also works as an artist. (Masayoshi Nojo is also the artist for the Open Creation of Art “Immerse yourself in the transitory nature,” a live painting performance open to the public at the adjacent WHAT MUSEUM, which will also be available for viewing during the museum tour after the workshop.)

 Museum Tour

The exhibition curator will guide you through the two exhibitions currently being held at WHAT MUSEUM while explaining the highlights of the exhibitions and the artworks.

□“ART de Cha Cha Cha− Exploring the DNA of Japanese Contemporary Art −” from the Takahashi Ryutaro Collection

From the collection of Ryutaro Takahashi, one of Japan's foremost art collectors, we present works by artists who express themselves in new forms and methods, reinterpreting the culture, art, and values built up over Japan's long history from their unique perspectives while inheriting traditions.

□Open Creation of Art “Immerse yourself in the transitory nature” by Masayoshi NOJO

The workshop's instructor, Masayoshi Noshiro, is also holding a live art-making session. The artist's new series of works called "Links" and new works from his signature "Mirage" series will be exhibited there. By providing a place where visitors can meet with the artist while he is working on his art pieces, the exhibition creates an opportunity for visitors to encounter the process of creating works they would not normally see, and find new insights into the artist's thinking and deep understanding of his works.
